The medical condition sepsis is usually caused by blood bacterial infection known as septicemia. This is why the term septicemia and sepsis are used together most of the time.
How septicemia results in sepsis:
a. Bacteria released poisons associated with septicemia
b. The immune system can mount huge inflammation to the said poisons called sepsis.

Bacterial infections commonly cause sepsis. Fungal infection sepsis can also be a cause.

Newborns or neonatal infants can also have sepsis. There are infants who are at risk to have the condition like low birth rate, born preterm, low APGAR score, presence of group B streptococcus.
Seniors can likewise have the disease. These are those with weakened immunity, due to aging, exposure to hospital, cancer, diabetes and other related.
