COPD is a common lung disease. When a person has it, it is very common to have the difficulty of breathing.

Two main forms of COPD

* Emphysema: lung damage

* Chronic bronchitis: long term productive cough or with mucus

The main cause is due to smoking. This is a risk factor but not all those who smoke gets it.

There are also rare instances when nonsmokers who have insufficient alpha-1 antitrypsin (protein) may have emphysema later in life.

Other risk factors include gases/fumes exposure, heavy exposure to pollution or second-hand smoke and frequent cooking in fire without proper ventilation.

    COPD is a group of progressive lung diseases. The most common are emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Many people with COPD have both of these conditions. Emphysema slowly destroys air sacs in your lungs, which interferes with outward air flow. Bronchitis causes inflammation and narrowing of the bronchial tubes, which allows mucus to build up. The top cause of COPD is tobacco smoking and long-term exposure to chemical irritants can also lead to this disease.
