This is a medical term but very often used by most eye doctors. The condition means the eyes of the patient is not completely round in shape. This is common for most almost everyone but in varying degree.

The shape of a normal eyeball is like a ball, perfectly round. If it is shaped like a football or similar to the back part of a spoon, when looking at an object, only part of it is in focus.

Most people are born with it and the cause is unknown. It can be acquired due to an eye injury, surgery or disease.

Blurry vision and eye strain.

An eye exam can diagnose the condition. When examined, the eye doctor may also uncover other conditions like farsighted or nearsighted. The disease comes on gradually and thus, if there are any changes in the vision, it is best to see a doctor.

Astigmatism is a common refractive error that affects the eye’s ability to focus light. It occurs when the curvature of the eye is irregularly shaped. Most people have some degree of astigmatism, though for many it may go unnoticed. Astigmatism is not an eye disease it’s simply a refractive error like nearsightedness and farsightedness and it can be corrected with eyeglasses, contact lenses and LASIK surgery.

It’s a great post with lots of valuable information. Astigmatism has more than one category. An irregular-shaped cornea is called corneal astigmatism. While the shape of the lens being distorted is known as lenticular astigmatism. Both result in distorted vision when looking at objects near and far. Thanks and keep up the good work!
