The medicinal benefits of honey have been documented throughout history and medical literature abounds in its praise as a natural healing tool. The ancient Egyptians used it for embalming their prominent dead while the Greeks considered it as an important food and an effective healing medicine. Modern medical research has established honey as an all-around remedy for several ailments- be it a sore throat, a bad cold, as a dressing for a cut or a wound or to boost immunity levels.
Several health benefits of honey exist and some of them have been confirmed by research studies:
• As a medicine: According to a study published by The Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, children consuming small quantities of honey just before going to bed were found to sleep better and coughed less than those having nothing or just honey flavored syrup. Dr. Ian Paul, who is the lead study author and a researcher at Penn State College of Medicine, contends that this is the first time that honey has been proved as a treatment.
• Wound Care: ‘Manuka honey’ which is derived from the flower of the Manuka bush found in New Zealand has been the basis of Medihoney, which was approved by the FDA in 2007 to be used in the treatment of wounds, pressure sores, and skin ulcers. According to wound care specialist Frank Bongiorno, Managing Director, of Ann Arbor, Michigan, Manuka honey proves very effective in facilitating the healing process.
• Nutritional benefits: According to a Swiss study that researched the nutritional value of honey, found it to be rich in carbohydrates but with a low glycemic index (GI) in the range of 32 to 86. Low GI foods have a tendency to release glucose in a more slow and steady manner than high GI foods, which can cause blood sugar to increase.
