The generic name of Temodal is Temozolomide. It is a cancer-fighting type of medication called antineoplastics. It is part of the group of alkylating agents. It can help prevent the cancer cells growth by way of interfering with DNA required for cell production. Considering that cancer cells reproduce quicker than a healthy cell, the medication targets cancerous cells. This medicine is mainly used for treating brain tumors of specific types.
Forms of the medicine
Capsules: 5mg., 20mg, 100mg, 140mg, and 250mg.
Way of Usage
The use of this medicine varies per person depending on the current health status and if the patient has been treated with chemotherapy in the past.
Usually, this is taken once each day for 5 days then 23 days of a rest period. Basically, this can equate to a 28-day cycle that is repeated until completed. The doctor will assess it.
The capsule form needs to be swallowed entirely at least an hour prior to a meal. It is not advisable to chew or open the capsules.
If nausea is being experienced, anti-nausea medicines can be taken before or after taking the drug in order to minimize the risk of vomiting.
There are factors that can affect the dosage that the doctor would prescribe like body weight, needs of the person, medical condition or other medication being taken.
Who cannot take this medicine?
* Allergic to any ingredient of the medicine
* If the patient is diagnosed with reduced bone marrow function
– Abdominal pain
– blurred vision
– hair loss
Pregnant and breastfeeding women need to be cautious and must inform their physician of such conditions. The medicine can likely cause irreversible infertility hence, this needs to be discussed by male patients with their doctors as well.
