Propranolol is a type of beta-blocker given primarily for irregular heart rates and hypertension. It is now lauded by researchers for having anti-cancer properties. It’s cheap, comes in generic form, and works actively against angiosarcoma, a rare type of cancer.
Pan Pantziarka, Ph.D. and study author from the Anticancer Fund, says that angiosarcoma is rare and that no drug manufacturer will fund researching for its cure. Fortunately, they discovered propranolol which is effective and has little side effects. Another study author, Vikas P Sukhatame of Global Cures, adds that clinical data they have accumulated on the drug can be used to explore other tumor types as well. Their study also mentioned its ability to prevent tumors from spreading.
Propranolol has already been utilized in the 1960’s for benign tumors in children, adds Gauthier Bouche, Medical director of the Anticancer Fund. He said the discovery was accidental.
This came about from the collaboration of Anticancer Fund (Belgium) and Global Cures (USA) in the Repurposing Drugs in Oncology (ReDO) project. They believe that current medicines are possible sources of future treatments against cancer.
