alpha-blockers

This medication is a kind of drug that can help lower blood pressure. Usually, these do not work alone. It works together with other drugs like diuretics for those whose blood pressure is hard to control. It causes the dilatation of the blood vessels. Aside from lowering the blood pressure, it is used in men to treat the enlargement of the prostate. Most patients know this medicine as it can also be used for other illnesses like:

Peripheral artery disease

Enlarged Prostate

Pheochromocytoma

How does it work?

Alpha blockers are termed as alpha-adrenergic blocking agents as they work by preventing the transfer of messages to the other body parts. Similar to other blockers type of medicines, alpha blockers are linked to molecules in the body that act as chemical messages receptors. Considering that the chemical message cannot reach the target, thus, it is blocked.

Alpha receptors are the target of alpha blockers. These are found in smooth muscles and arteries. With the action of the drugs, it helps the hormone adrenaline to tighten on smaller arteries/venous walls and muscles. It blocks the effect of relaxing the blood vessels hence the blood flow will increase to lower blood pressure.

Alpha blockers cause blood vessels to dilate, thereby lowering blood pressure. These medications are also used to treat prostate enlargement in men. Alpha blockers include doxazosin mesylate (Cardura), prazosin hydrochloride (Minipress), and terazosin hydrochloride (Hytrin).

Alpha-blockers are medicines that are mainly used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and problems with passing urine in men who have enlargement of the prostate gland. They relax certain muscles and help small blood vessels remain open. They work by keeping the hormone norepinephrine from tightening the muscles in the walls of smaller arteries and veins, which causes the vessels to remain open and relaxed. This improves blood flow and lowers blood pressure.

By experts opinion that alternative alpha blockers, such as prazosin, tamsulosin, doxazosin, or terazosin can have adverse interactions with beta blockers, erectile dysfunction drugs, anxiolytics, and antihistamines. Yohimbine can interact with stimulants, hypertension drugs, naloxone, and clonidine. Thank you so much and keep up the great work!
